Why recertify

AI practice changes quickly. Annual recertification confirms that a holder has kept their competence current, so the credential continues to mean the same thing to everyone who checks it.

The cycle

CAIP is valid for one year from the date it is issued. Renewal opens 90 days before the expiry date: from then on your account shows a reminder, and you can renew by either route below. Each renewal extends the same credential — with the same ID — for a further year from its current expiry date, so renewing early in the window never costs you time.

Route 1: continuing education

Earn and log 10 continuing-education credits during the year, where one credit is one hour of qualifying activity. At least 7 credits must relate directly to the CAIP competence domains; up to 3 may be in related professional skills. Credits count only towards the cycle in which the activity took place; they do not carry over.

Qualifying activities include structured courses and workshops, conference sessions, published writing or talks, mentoring, contributing to open-source AI tooling, and serving as an AIPA item writer, reviewer or standard-setting panellist. Log each activity in your account with a description and the credits claimed. Once your credits for the year are approved, renew from your account in the renewal window.

Review and audit

Logged activities are reviewed by AIPA staff before they count. In addition, a random sample of renewals is audited each year and asked for evidence of the activities logged (for example, a certificate of attendance or a link to published work). Keep your evidence for 12 months after the end of each cycle. Failing to respond to an audit, or claiming credits for activities that did not take place, can lead to suspension or revocation.

Route 2: re-examination

Pass the current version of the CAIP exam in the 90 days before your credential expires. The renewal applies to your existing credential, from its current expiry date.

If a credential lapses

A credential not renewed by its expiry date shows as Expired on the public register and must no longer be used (see Credential & Mark Use). Expired credentials cannot be renewed; to hold the credential again you must pass the current exam, which issues a new credential.

When the scheme changes

If the CAIP scheme changes materially — for example, a new blueprint — we publish what holders must do to stay current, and give at least 6 months' notice before any new requirement applies to renewal.
